The DRC's Imperialism
I visited the DRC during the research from my book. And it's very, very stark what you see because there is a small airport in Coasian and ordinary people mining by hand for cobalt. The DRC has a history of foreign imperialists, many from Europe, chewing up its territory for fabulously valuable commodities. One rare earth Chinese specialist once told me, China has sacrificed its environment to feed the rest of the world with rare earth minerals. It hasn't taken care of basic environmental regulations so that we in the West could enjoy having these metals refined in our technologies. We have outsourced pollution. Not a single inhabited continent has avoided raging wildfars, drought and floods
