Netscape's Success in the Browser Wars
"I don't know that any of it would have mattered," says Netscape co-founder. "You run into a company that has billions of dollars of cash and your millions of dollars doesn't do you much good" The browser was free for non-commercial use, but Oracle could find 20,000 unlicensed copies by looking at its server logs. In terms of the browser itself, if you have a competitor who can outspend you and give it away for free, you're kind of doomed.
