A Marxist might read Hobbes as saying that where the state does not intervene citizens can do what is most profitable to themselves. But that reading of Hobbes's intellectual history looks a bit one-sided, he says. The big conflicts are more likely to be conflicts about honour than they are conflicts about economics. For Marx and Engels, politics, that is, the politics of the modern sovereign state is the problem. Revolution is the solution.
