The Role of Leptin in Fertility
The discovery of leptin in the 1990s allowed us to make the mechanistic link to between how is body fat communicating with the rest of the body that enough energy is present for fertility. Leptin is made by adipose tissue and proportion to its mass and acts on the hypothalamus as well as elsewhere in the body but principally on the hypothalamic pituitary axes. It stimulates both the gonadal and thyroid axis, so it's providing the missing link or at least the link that was missing in the 1970s and 80s before we knew about it.
