The Christmas Wish Goes Wrong

The movie almost hints at it being like out of the bottle movie. Kevin says everyone in this family hates me. Mom says then maybe you should ask Santa for a new family. And then one minute later, it's they're all asleep overnight. The wind knocks out the power and the phone lines. There's multiple moments where he's staring directly into the camera. I don't really have an answer for what that is, but what do you guys think that is?
