i applaud judge gertner for her terrific analysis of the eye witness testimony and the expert testimony. When you have a cross racial identification, when you have a person of one race trying to identify a stranger of a different race, people make more mistakes. And in case you are wondering, the suspect in this case pleaded guilty. Have i seen this before? Is a signal detection problem. Like reading a radar screen. I see a face in a line up and have a vague sense of familiarity. But is that feeling a genuine signal, the memory trace left from having seen the person, or noise the random little pangs of dejaveu that the brain throws up from time to time
