Is There a Difference Between Control and Consciousness?

Most of your brain is working on automatic pilot. Your brain is always engaged in controlled processing, even when you feel like things are automatic. Habits are strongly under the control of context because context is one source that is driving the predictions in your brain. When you can't literally move your body, you can change your context by being mindful. That's what mindfulness essentially does. It's bringing certain features of the world, of your surroundings to the forefront and backgrounding other features as well.
