It was very like the influences of French and Italian theater on English theater at this time. The serious actors, they all decamped for France once more. Every play that I know of until six days before 68 had to be approved by some Chamberlain. It wasn't until 1968 that the Lord Chamberlain's censorship of plays was ended.
