Economists used to believe that this combination of stagnation in the economy and inflation was impossible, if i understand correctly. So for inflation and stagnation to occur at the same time means that something really is broken in the economy. It basically means that aggregate demand, the purchasing power that's out there, is being swallowed up by creasing prices. And it means probably, that businesses and employees are kind of locked in an inflationary psychology where they think that the priority has got to be not to maximize production or efficiency but just keep with the constantly rising level of wages and prices.
