In his early teens, stills became the drummer for a band called the radars. While he was drumming, he studied their league guitarist, chuck shwin. Stills taught himself how to emulate chet atkins's travis picking style. There exists a recording of him, aged 16, singing one of his own songs and playing finger pick guitar. And while the song is not exactly the strongest thing i've ever heard lyrically, it's clearly the work of someone who is already a confident performer.
