The main goal was to get to the transnistria, keeping in mind muldova. In ukraine, they already have bellerus. So at least they they have three. They could have three of the former soviet republics. And their advances in ukraine will mean that moldova will be also joined to the new restored soviet union. That is why south's direction was still and will critically important.
