CHAPTER

Is Long Termism Robust to Certain Variations in Moral Theory?

Long termism is the idea that there will be an enormous number of people in the future. In a new paper, scientists argue that we can influence average well being levels across a very long time scale even without affecting numbers of future people. If you can imagine an invent an intervention that would improve things for the world's poorest people now, and that would have no knock on effect down the centuries, it's plausible that something that would reduce extinction risk or improve the whole course of the very long run future even by just a tie. Any bit at every future time would be even better than that.
