When we do an intentional practice like loving kindness meditation or even let's say mindful eating or mindful walking, we're strengthening certain seeds in our consciousness actively. The Buddha had this image that the mind is like a field or a garden and the role of the meditator is to cultivate the seeds of the mind and that garden. So there are certain seeds that we don't necessarily, we don't want to water, like maybe the seeds of bitterness or jealousy or anger or despair,. Even anxiety or fear. And then these other seeds like compassion, kindness, forgiveness, courage, non fear. These are the kind of seeds that we're activating when we're sitting and breathing and being really present
