Boethius' Theological Treatise on Good and Evil
Boethius says that in so far as anything does exist, it must be good. But he doesn't want to say things are good in their very essence. Goodness is not part of what it is to be a human or giraffe - this is one way they differ from God. Boethius solves the difficulty by asking us to imagine a situation that can never occur.
