The Fratria in Athens

Every citizen belonged to one of four fylae, or tribes. Members of these four tribes traced their ancestry back to the four sons of Aion. The institution of the fratria was an aristocratic stronghold set by birth and tradition. It was within this framework that the events of 7th and 6th centuries BC Athens unfolded.
