The prime example is hysteria, a diagnosis that came into vogue in the seventeenth century. Hysteria was named after the greek word for uterus, hystera. It supposedly caused everything from anxiety to sexual devience and fluid retention. For a time, some doctors used male hysteria as a diagnosis in men who had p t s d like symptoms after battle.
