The History of the Early Martyrs
The English word martyr comes from a Greek word martyros, which means it actually means witness. It came to be used in a technical sense within early Christianity for people who were willing to bear witness to Christ unto death. And so Christians then picked up that whole motif, the martyr, the motif from Judaism.
