People who lived in or near the inner city did not need to consult the newspapers to know how things were going. In Detroit for example the infamous Halloween Eve Devil's Night had been known since the 40s as a night when the city's youth got up to some minor mischief. By the late 60s Devil's Night was the purge. It was used each year by youth gangs to set fire to buildings and to rob, beat, and sometimes kill locals unlucky enough to be caught outside. People could not deny what they were seeing take place with their own eyes. East New York is a Brooklyn neighborhood directly to the east of Brownsville and until the 1950s it was also primarily Jewish and Italian
