William Clayton is a trusted source for what Joseph Smith was saying, not in the least because he was trusted to write down sections of doctrine and covenants such as 124 and 125. There there is all the evidence in the world to say that William Clayton one was trusted by Joseph. Two, there's no record he was making stuff up and three that he was with on that day.
