Amazon.com did not finish their migration off of Oracle databases and on to AWS products until 2019. Meanwhile, by that point, Amazon had eight different database solutions for other companies to use. By the time it was finished, Amazon had invented three of them. And it's still hard to migrate within the company.

So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
