The central ventilation system has a heat exchanger that can be switched on or off. When it's warmer outside than inside then the bypass is on so the heat exchange is working to keep the cold inside and the warm outside. During night when the temperature is falling at some point that the bypass it's switched on so that the cold air from outside comes into the house.
