Lucy Rees - A History of Stoneware
Lucy Rees began her career in Vienna but as a Jew escaped persecution in 1938. She came to London in 1938 and soon after that arrived at her studio in London. Stoneware is fired at a higher temperature and is more durable so it lends itself to functional ceramics like coffee sets. The result of this higher firing temperature encourages a closer interaction between the glaze and the clay beneath. It also was a crucial development in the way her work looked as well.
