The Four Pillars of Russian Foreign Policy

There are four factors that predate the earthquake that Crimea and Ukraine crisis produced for Russian foreign policy. The need to protect the border and maintain security and stability along the colossal Russia-China border, political compatibility between the two regimes and then the mutual affinity between the leaders. Both countries really put premium on sovereignty and state over the rights of individuals very broadly defined. Neither Russia or China fits into the model which we'll call liberal Western democracy. They try to manage their domestic politics in a different way. And they have some sort of suspicions about US intentions when it comes to their regimes and themselves.
