In 1944, Duvalier leaves Haiti for the United States. He wins a scholarship to study public health medicine at the University of Michigan. His American studies also set him up with a job that will ultimately lead him into the world of politics. Thousands of rural Haitians are suffering from a crippling skin disease called yours. Untreated, it leads to permanent disability and disfigurement.
