The Depth of the Earthquake
An earthquake happens because one side of a fault moves with respect to the other suddenly. What really matters is how close you are to the earthquake along with the magnitude and then potentially your local soil conditions that can amplify the shaking. The good news in California is it dies off really quickly because our, our, we have so many faults and our rocks are actually pretty hot. That dampening with distance goes on very quickly compared to say East Coast.
