The Panic of Richmond
President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet set fire to important military documents. They gathered what they could, including the remaining gold and silver left in the Confederate treasury. The next morning, Union troops marched into a smoldering city. More of Richmond had been reduced to ashes than Atlanta or Columbia.
