The Story of Lula, a Brazilian Migrant in the 1970s

Lula was born in a poor state in the North East of Brazil, Penambuco. He didn't learn to read or write until he was ten years old. His parents were illiterate and his father migrated south looking for work. Lula's mum forced to move with her children into a small room behind a Sao Paulo bar. At 24, he got married but died from hepatitis two years later. In the 70s, encouraged by his older brother, who was a communist, Lula became involved with Brazil's labour movement.
