Free Speech Is Important for Healthy Politics
There was a strong Baptist tradition of what was called a disestablishmentarianism, which was the idea that you don't want church and state to mix at all. And I do think it goes back to some American roots, which is that not entirely, but there was certainly a group of Americans who came to the United States in part because they were religious dissenters and they wanted freedom of religion. That has shaped part of the ethos and the spirit of how we think about free speech in this country. You really can't have a democratic country without freedom of speech.
