Is Trade Protectionism Good or Regressive Tax?

A lot of people have some confused thoughts about that Tyler Cohen wrote a post about this which I thought was good. The whole thing seems a little improperly motivated right we're talking about a really big change in tax policy that is being undertaken for unclear reasons. It seems like the people behind this have literally opposite opinions about what its impact will be and that various people are trying to trick each other.
