Neutrinos don't interact with things like normal things do. They will travel through I think a light year of lead without bumping into anything. But if you've got a nuclear reactor for example, which is pouring out millions and millions and millions of these things every second, then it is possible to capture one or two. And this began noticing, noticing them began in the 1930s with a phenomenon called beta decay.
