The term free market itself you don't see it used in the way of like a totem. My sense is that they emerge in the 19th century imperial Britain with the Manchester men who start calling themselves free marketeers. The first time we see it in the titles of books in English is in the 1620s and those books have given historians a lot to sort of chew on.
