Dark matter is supposed to be undiscovered form of matter that is invisible and only shows its presence by gravity. It's thought to be needed to explain why galaxies rotate the way they do, among other things. Dark energy is a force causing the universe to increase the rate at which it is expanding. An alternative to dark matter is the idea that we need to modify our theory of gravity.
