In maternal instinct you are willingly sacrificing your own security and well being in exchange for the protection of others. The priority is neutralizing the threat, whether that's your cubs or strangers on the street. It doesn't matter that paternal instinct is uniquely separate from the other two, because you are actively engaging the threat first and foremost to try to neutralize it.
