The Generational Idea

Generationalism was a way to tangle with and engage with mass politics, but without succumbing to its logical conclusion. It posited a potential connection between privileged individuals capable of shaping attitudes and masses capable of implementing these attitudes through political action. In most Western and Central European countries during this period, the middle classes were torn between their desire to rest power from the former elites and their fear of a rebellion of the masses. The role of intellectuals, especially literary intellectuals, was key.
