Drums With Variable Dynamics
Dynamics play a crucial role in the groove as well. Ghosted notes are played very soft to the point where you often, on recordings or alive, can't hear them. Russ and i recorded wegh more than i could fit into this episode for all three of these songs. We went through a really cool chronology of how clyde stubblefields grooves evolved from 19 67 through to 19 70. And then there was his humungously sampled drum break on 19 seventy's funky drummer. Each of those grooves is every bit as iconic as cold sweat - russ had a lot to say about each of them.
Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
