John Watson says innis was not just defending institutions, but actively building new ones. Inna feared that the intrusion of professors into politics would weaken the independence of the university. He didn't think economists should commit themselves to one particular political pattern of thought. When people left academic world to go into government work, he felt they had betrayed their major responsibility as social scientists.
