The Hedgehog and the Fox: Leo Tolstoy's View of History

Leo Tolstoy's vision of history follows a certain understanding of free will. He observes that we only believe we're affecting freely because we're ignorant of the real causes of things. We see things such as power and accidents as causes for other things to happen. For Tolstoy, these are just the tip of the iceberg of causality - if we felt their weight, we'd scarcely act at all. Instead, live according to common-sense beliefs, which stand the test of time.
