The colour of the moon during a lunar eclipse can actually tell you something about the state of the atmosphere at the time. A particularly dark eclipse would indicate a huge eruption that pushed volcanic aerosols high up into the stratosphere. And scientists have been using ancient descriptions to get information about ancient volcanic eruptions.
