The Appeal of the Original Position
The social contract is a way of thinking about the world to ask yourself how would I like the society in which I live to be structured. It's basic principles, it's basic guidelines. The appeal is that it's such an intuitive idea and strikes people as a natural way to think about what a fair society might look like. Daniel Altschuler: Rawls actually explicitly said that there was sort of nothing - he was very modest but famously modest.
