Using Algi Cells to Keep Animal Organs Alive
Bimedical researchers often want to keep animal organs alive outside of the body so they can study them. They've done is to inject algi cells into the blood vessels in the tadpoles brains. And that means that when they illuminate them, the algi in the light produce oxygen which is then fed directly to the surrounding brain cells.
