The way that the book was structured. When I first started thinking about writing biography, I assumed it would be straightforward chronology. And so probably wouldn't be very interesting to my readers either. There's been a lot of biographies of Chaucer and I wanted to think, well, what can I do that's going to be a very different kind of biography that will yield new insights?
