The Resignation Letters of Francisco Medero

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico helped overthrow the government in a coup on February 20, 1980. He says he and then-President Victoriano Huerta worked out an agreement with ousted President Gustavo Dias that would allow him to run for president. The two men argued over who should take charge of the new government but eventually came up with what they called the "pact of the embassy" John Avlon: Now it was time to dispose of the old government after all had been deposed at gunpoint.
