The Impact of Yellow Fever on Philadelphia

The federal government was forced to leave town. Tens of thousands of residents fled. Everyone who had anywhere else to go left Philadelphia. The impact was long lasting, particularly because yellow fever returned in 1797 and then again in 1798. Each time killing over a thousand people and up to 4,000 in the case of 1798.
