The Neurologic Effects of H5N1 Infection
H5N1 virus is infecting the brain and causing severe neurologic signs in wild mammals. In some cases it's not even going to the lungs at all, but directly to the brain via the olfactory nerve. The virus gets into the nasal cavity and uses this pathway as a shortcut to get into the brain. It then spread throughout the brain and cause severe brain inflammation.
