The Not One Drop Policy Reflects the Desire to Move Closer to the Mainstream
In 1908, President Joseph F. Smith and other leaders gathered to discuss matters of race. They got in a letter from a recently returned mission president in South Africa. He asked what shall be done where people tainted with Negro blood embraced the gospel. In that meeting he recites for the gathered council the stories of Elijah Abel and Jane Manning James. This effectively removes black priesthood men from the collective memory of the church.
