Osman was a blameless old man, down to death as he read the Quran sitting in his house in Medina. The throne had excluded Ali and had excluded many of the most pious of the early Muslims from the fruits of office. So already wearing very contested territory here. Abu Bakr's early two-year reign was primarily concerned with reuniting the Muslim empire in the Arabian Peninsula following the death of Muhammad.
