Katsumoto wanted to become fluent in Japanese within 18 months. He had a bad time living and working in Japan, so he decided to leave early. When he was two years into learning the language, he found that he could speak it fluently. "There's no point of true mastery where you reach an endpoint," says Katsumoto.
