Joseph: I think we've all been on the positive and riching, depthful, soulful part of being melancholic or having a melancholic temperament. But I want to offer that there's another way of looking at it, of course. And the first place that this takes me is Freud's famous essay called Morning and Melancholia in which he talks about mourning as a very natural process. He famously writes in that essay, The Shadow of the Object falls on the ego. We experience melancholy when we've lost something, according to Freud, but we don't really know what the thing is that we're losing.
