Women in the Life of Jesus

In the ancient world generally, not just in Israel, women were second-rate citizens. It looks like Jesus maybe is opening up and then that seems to have taken off them with his early followers. When you say that there were women following Jesus and donating money to his cause, were they doing this as independent actors or is it in conjunction with their husbands or fathers? This is the only verse about Mary Magdalene in Jesus' public ministry.
