I'll Tell You the Bridge Over the London Thames

In the 1960s and 70s it was a lot of money for what we call an area of studies. It's certainly meant a student could learn about Southeast Asia or about Eastern Europe but then there were foundations which funded that decided this was not a good investment. This only began to invest instead of narrow disciplines, so the United States gets involved whether it's Vietnam or in the Middle East or in the Arabian Peninsula. And there's nobody who knows anything about these countries. So these efforts to not learn about other societies are told but you know there has to be support for that. If there isn't we just end up making the worst kinds of mistakes.
